Beyond Stopping the Bleed: Opportunities for Plastic Surgeons in the Response to Mass Casualty Events

This article examines gaps and opportunities in civilian hemorrhage control beyond the immediate application of bleeding-control techniques. Building on lessons from military and mass-casualty settings, the authors discuss how education, public access to hemorrhage control tools, and system-level preparedness can further reduce preventable death from traumatic bleeding. The paper emphasizes the role of surgeons and health systems in advancing training, policy, and implementation to strengthen civilian trauma response.
